Leroy and Lewis Beet BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp beet juice fresh, if possible
- 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup ketchup
- 5 tbsp yellow mustard
- ½ tsp liquid smoke (hickory or mesquite) start here, add more to taste
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 ¼ tsp salt
- 1 ½ tsp ancho chili powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp ground cumin
- ¼ tsp smoked paprika
- ⅛ tsp cayenne pepper optional, for heat
- ½ tsp black papper start here, add more to taste
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil then turn off the heat. This recipe makes enough sauce to fill 1 – 8oz mason jar.
- Store in the refrigerator in a sealed glass jar or airtight sauce bottle for 2-3 weeks. It's if it is used within a few weeks for freshness.
- If you want to preserve it longer, water bath canning will work well. If properly canned and sealed, the shelf life is 12 months if store in a cool, dark pantry. Once opened, refrigerate and use within 1 month.
If you’ve ever stood in line for barbecue in Austin and thought, “This sauce hits different,” you’re not alone. Leroy and Lewis have a knack for doing things their own way, and this beet BBQ sauce is proof. It’s smoky, tangy, a little sweet, and has that earthy depth you didn’t know your ribs needed.
At first glance, beet juice in BBQ sauce might sound like a dare. But in practice? It gives the sauce a natural sweetness, rich color, and a subtle earthiness that balances beautifully with bold spices and a hit of smoke. Think Texas-style barbecue with an unexpected twist—the kind of flavor that makes people pause mid-bite to ask, “What’s in this?”
Why You’ll Love This BBQ Sauce
- Complex but balanced: The acidity from the vinegar and Worcestershire cuts through the sweetness.
- Deep flavor without simmering all day: It comes together in minutes.
- Customizable heat: Add more cayenne or black pepper to taste.
- Small batch size: Perfect for trying something new without committing to a vat.
How to Use It
This sauce is built for brisket, pulled pork, and sausage, but don’t stop there:
- Drizzle over smoked turkey or grilled chicken
- Use as a burger topping (trust me)
- Stir into baked beans for a color and flavor kick
- Glaze roasted veggies for a plant-based BBQ vibe
Storage Tips
- Short term: Keeps in the fridge for 2–3 weeks in a mason jar or airtight bottle.
- Long term: If you’re into canning, water bath processing gives you up to 12 months shelf life. Just store in a cool, dark pantry and refrigerate after opening.
This beet BBQ sauce isn’t just quirky for the sake of being different. It genuinely elevates your BBQ game with something unique but totally approachable. Whether you’re chasing trophies or just hungry friends, it earns its spot in the sauce lineup.
